Phase one of Monument Health’s $80M expansion at Spearfish Hospital is nearing completion. The new medical-surgical wing with all private rooms could open by February, launching a multi-phase project that also includes new surgical facilities and a larger emergency department.
Phase one of Monument Health’s $80 million expansion at Spearfish Hospital is nearing completion, with the new medical-surgical wing expected to be ready for patient move-in as early as February. The expansion is being delivered in three phases and represents a major capital investment in the regional healthcare facility.
The new medical-surgical wing will replace shared patient rooms with private rooms, each including a dedicated bathroom. Hospital leadership said the design provides additional space for family members or companions to remain with patients during care, reflecting updated care delivery standards.
Once patients transition into the new wing, the existing medical-surgical area will be demolished to make way for phase two construction. That phase includes development of a new surgical wing, with construction expected to take approximately 14 months. Hospital officials anticipate phase two could be completed by late summer 2027.
Following completion of the surgical wing, the current surgical space will be vacated and renovated as part of phase three, which focuses on expansion of the emergency department. The emergency room is planned to increase from seven beds to 13 beds, along with larger treatment rooms and additional workspace for physicians and nursing staff. Phase three will also introduce dedicated behavioral health treatment space within the emergency department.
The final phase of the project includes construction of a fully covered ambulance bay to provide weather protection for emergency medical services arriving at the hospital.
Planning and design for the expansion took more than a year, with hospital leadership emphasizing staff input and prioritizing clinical spaces over administrative upgrades. Limited community-use conference space will be included as part of the project.
Hospital officials noted that the expansion is intended to improve capacity and quality of care while allowing the facility to remain competitive as Sanford Health plans a new 480,000 SF campus in southwestern Rapid City. The project status and timeline were reported by the Black Hills Pioneer.
