Greater Boston Gains 144 Behavioral Health Beds as Tufts Medicine and Acadia Healthcare Open a New Malden Hospital

Tufts Medicine and Acadia Healthcare held a ribbon-cutting for a new 144-bed behavioral health hospital at 100 Hospital Road in Malden, Massachusetts. The facility serves children, adolescents, adults, and older adults, and is expected to open by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

A joint venture between Tufts Medicine and Acadia Healthcare has reached a key milestone in Malden, Massachusetts, where leaders gathered to mark the ribbon-cutting of a new 144-bed behavioral health hospital. Situated at 100 Hospital Road, the campus is expected to begin serving patients before the close of the first quarter of 2026.

Behavioral health capacity has remained a persistent constraint across eastern Massachusetts, and arrangements that pair established health systems with specialized operators have become a frequent route to adding inpatient beds. Acadia Healthcare contributes national experience running psychiatric and addiction treatment facilities, while Tufts Medicine brings regional clinical infrastructure and academic relationships. Together the partners plan to serve children, adolescents, adults, and older adults through a combination of inpatient and intensive outpatient programs.

Care teams will include psychiatrists, nurses, therapists, and social workers who coordinate treatment around each patient. Beyond direct services, the hospital is structured to function as a training site for future clinicians through a relationship with Tufts University School of Medicine, an arrangement aimed at strengthening the regional behavioral health workforce.

Consolidation of programs that MelroseWakefield Hospital and Lawrence Memorial Hospital previously delivered forms part of the project’s foundation, gathering those services under one modern campus.
