Corewell Health is investing $1.7 billion in two Michigan hospital towers. A 780,000 SF building will rise 11 stories on the Butterworth campus in Grand Rapids, and a 423,000 SF, eight story tower is planned in Troy. Construction starts in summer 2027 and finishes in 2030.
Two hospital towers in Michigan are heading into regulatory and municipal review together, with construction on both scheduled to start in summer 2027 and completion targeted for 2030. Corewell Health has placed a combined capital commitment of roughly $1.7 billion behind the two expansions, one in Grand Rapids and one in Troy.
Larger of the pair is planned for the Butterworth Hospital campus in Grand Rapids, where a 780,000 SF, 11 story facility carries a $1.34 billion budget. Program elements include an emergency department, 180 private patient rooms, 17 operating rooms and a hyperbaric chamber. Site assembly covers properties at 230 Michigan St. and 330 Barclay Ave., both currently occupied by Corewell Health buildings. Height of the proposed design reduces the building footprint and increases separation from nearby neighbors, and various city approvals will be required. Butterworth operates as the only Level I trauma center in West Michigan, and its average patient census has exceeded 90 percent occupancy over the past year. Demolition precedes vertical construction on that site.
In Troy, approximately $440 million is allocated to a 423,000 SF, eight story tower at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital. That building adds another 180 private rooms equipped for general care through intensive care, plus a new emergency department waiting room and improved connectivity across the campus. Because the tower site sits adjacent to the existing emergency department, the design provides direct access from the parking deck. Troy records more than 106,000 emergency visits annually and runs consistently above 90 percent capacity.
Delivery partners are split by market. The Christman Company and Spesh Construction are working on Butterworth, while Barton Malow and AIMS Construction are assigned to Troy. All four firms are based in Michigan.
Corewell Health announced both projects on August 27, 2026. Additional work in the pipeline includes an ambulatory center in Oxford, a cardiac ambulatory surgery center in Sterling Heights and further clinical expansions. The not for profit system operates 21 hospitals and more than 300 outpatient locations across Michigan.
