Akron Children’s Hospital has opened a new Autism Center on its main campus, expanding dedicated services for patients with autism spectrum disorder and related developmental needs. The 11,020 SF facility incorporates clinical exam rooms, assessment spaces and therapy areas designed to support sensory processing and individualized interventions. The center’s layout includes quiet zones and adjustable environments intended to accommodate a range of sensory sensitivities and clinical functions.
The Autism Center’s design reflects an emphasis on coordinated, family-centered care. Treatment and evaluation rooms are configured to support multidisciplinary teams, including developmental specialists, therapists and primary care providers. Color, lighting and acoustic elements of the space were selected to reduce sensory overload and improve comfort for patients and families during visits.
Located on the first floor of the hospital’s main campus, the center provides direct access from parking and main facilities. In addition to clinical functions, the center includes private consultation areas and spaces for caregiver education and support. Akron Children’s leadership has described the center as part of an ongoing effort to increase access to autism-related services across its health system.
The new facility was funded in part by philanthropic support and is intended to improve local capacity for diagnosis, intervention and long-term management of developmental and behavioral conditions. Akron Children’s communications materials provided details of the center’s features and intended role in the hospital’s broader service offerings.
