St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport received a $15M gift from the estate of Town Fair Tire founder Neil Mellen. The donation will fund renovations to the hospital’s oncology unit, expanding treatment space, upgrading technology, and improving patient comfort.
St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, part of the Hartford HealthCare system, has received a $15 million philanthropic gift to support expansion and modernization of its cancer care facilities. The donation, made through the estate of Neil Mellen, founder of Town Fair Tire, will fund renovations to the hospital’s oncology unit.
Hospital officials said the project will add new treatment spaces, introduce upgraded medical technology, and incorporate design enhancements intended to improve patient comfort during care delivery. The renovation is being positioned as a key component of St. Vincent’s long-term strategy to strengthen its role as a regional provider of advanced cancer services.
The gift is among the largest single donations in Hartford HealthCare’s history and continues a long-standing pattern of philanthropic support from Mellen. Over more than 15 years, his contributions have funded multiple clinical initiatives at St. Vincent’s.
In 2009, Mellen committed $500,000 to establish the Nancy Ann Mellen Infusion Center, which treats thousands of patients annually. Additional donations followed, including $250,000 in 2022 to support the hospital’s intensive care unit and a subsequent $4.25 million gift to enhance critical care and emergency services.
Hospital leadership noted that the oncology renovation reflects an ongoing focus on improving care delivery infrastructure while supporting patient and family experience. The announcement was reported by the Hartford Business Journal.
