Aurora Health Care plans a nearly $50M investment to redevelop the former Wisconsin Avenue School into The Beacon, a collaborative health and wellness center serving Milwaukee’s Near West Side, with programs focused on medical, social, and community support.
Aurora Health Care has announced plans to invest nearly $50 million to develop The Beacon, a collaborative health and wellness center on Milwaukee’s Near West Side. The project will redevelop the former Wisconsin Avenue School located at the intersection of North 27th Street and West Wisconsin Avenue, transforming the vacant building into a hub for integrated health, social, and community-based services.
The Beacon is designed to bring multiple partners together under one roof to provide coordinated programming focused on physical, mental, and social wellness. Planned services include prenatal and postnatal virtual care, violence prevention initiatives, eviction support and housing assistance, fresh food access, chronic disease prevention, and early childhood education programming. Aurora Health Care will convene clinical and community organizations to deliver these services through a collaborative model intended to reduce barriers to access.
The project fulfills a commitment made following the formation of Advocate Health, created through the combination of Aurora Health Care, Advocate Health Care in Illinois, and Atrium Health. Through The Beacon, Advocate Health’s National Center for Clinical and Community Impact will expand evidence-based practices aimed at addressing care gaps and improving health outcomes. The development is also part of Aurora’s broader community investment strategy, which includes longstanding involvement in the Near West Side neighborhood.
Planning for The Beacon has been informed by extensive community engagement. More than 200 residents and 40 community organizations participated in 14 listening sessions that helped shape both program offerings and design considerations. Additional sessions are planned to further refine the scope of services and building layout.
Aurora intends to preserve the historic exterior of the former school while redeveloping the interior to support modern programming needs. The organization is working with the City of Milwaukee to address a deed restriction on the property, allowing the project to move forward. Groundbreaking is targeted for Spring 2026, with an anticipated opening in Spring 2027, according to an Aurora Health Care announcement dated March 4, 2025.
