Methodist Healthcare is investing $45.8 million to expand Methodist Hospital Westover Hills in San Antonio. The project adds 48,319 SF and 51 beds, builds out fourth floor shell space, and enlarges emergency and imaging services. Construction starts in January and finishes by the end of 2027.
Methodist Healthcare has committed $45.8 million to enlarging Methodist Hospital Westover Hills, adding 48,319 SF and 51 beds to a San Antonio campus that reached capacity almost immediately after it opened.
Demand drove the decision. All staffed beds at the 180,000 SF, 54-bed acute care hospital filled within 48 hours of its 2024 opening, and occupancy has run consistently at 95 percent since. Westover Hills was the largest new development in the system’s history when it debuted on the city’s West Side.
Two components make up the added area. Fourth-floor shell space totaling 35,648 SF will be built out for medical/surgical, intensive care and progressive care use. A separate 12,671 SF addition serves emergency and imaging, and includes a redesigned triage area intended to improve patient flow along with a second CT machine equipped for clinically complex cardiovascular scans. Of the 51 new beds, 42 are inpatient and nine are in the emergency department.
Construction is scheduled to begin in January and finish by the end of 2027, with daily operations continuing throughout. Hospital CEO Megan Cool Amalakuhan described the project as “a response to our patient feedback and demand” for additional care settings.
Room remains for further growth on the 85-acre site. Two more floors and up to 90 beds could be added to the existing patient tower, or a new tower and parking garage could rise east of the current structure. The west side of the campus has space available for additional operating rooms, labs or emergency department use.
Announcements from Methodist Healthcare and reporting by the San Antonio Express-News place the work within the system’s most active building period in three decades. Since 2019, Methodist Healthcare has added five hospitals, six ambulatory service centers, eight freestanding emergency rooms, 15 urgent care centers and four imaging centers. Chief executive Dan Miller recently announced his departure to become president of HCA Healthcare’s East Florida Division.
A related project broke ground in April at 12479 U.S. 90 in the Medina Valley neighborhood. That 11,175 SF freestanding emergency room carries 12 emergency treatment rooms and will operate as an extension of the Westover Hills hospital.
