Community hospitals built in high-growth suburbs are frequently designed with vertical expansion capacity, allowing an owner to construct the structure and envelope once and fit out upper floors as volume justifies the operating cost. UNC Health Rex Holly Springs carried a growth plan from its 2021 opening, and this buildout advances that plan.
Utilization figures reported for the past year include more than 34,000 emergency department visits, about 4,500 surgeries and roughly 1,100 births. Census data cited by the health system shows the Holly Springs population rising 35 percent, placing the town among the fastest-growing in Wake County.
Roughly 50 positions accompany the expansion. Staffing generally governs the pace of bed activation in a hospital fit-out, since licensure and patient flow depend on clinical coverage rather than construction completion alone.
Executives describing the project include Tom Hughes, President and Chief Operating Officer of UNC Health Rex, and Roy Tempke, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Holly Springs campus. Holly Springs Mayor Mike Kondratick also addressed the expansion. UNC Health announced the project on August 14, 2026.
The hospital operates on Main Street off Highway 55 in Holly Springs, North Carolina. UNC Health Rex holds the campus within UNC Health, a not-for-profit academic health system with 20 hospitals statewide and an affiliation with the UNC School of Medicine.
