A public hearing before the Town of Brookhaven is set for August 27 at Town Hall. Vertical construction of the 144-bed pavilion carries an estimated cost of $400 million and a build duration near 30 months, while remaining funds are allocated to renovation and modernization of existing departments.
Bed replacement has become a recurring capital strategy for academic systems across the Northeast, where patient rooms built in the mid-twentieth century rarely satisfy current standards for single occupancy, infection control, and equipment clearance. Because construction proceeds on an operating campus, phasing, utility tie-ins, and temporary circulation tend to govern schedule more than structure does. Hospital projects of this magnitude in New York also advance through state Department of Health review alongside local land use approval.
Operations at the site date to 1956, when the facility opened as Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. It later became Long Island Community Hospital, and its merger into NYU Langone Health was completed in early 2025. Figures for the current proposal appear in the health system’s application to the town.
The pavilion would occupy 13.7 acres of the 35.8-acre campus at 101 Hospital Road, rising along the south side of the existing 370,550 SF hospital.
