Illinois regulators have cleared a $175 million cancer and neuroscience center planned for the Northwest Community Hospital campus in Arlington Heights, although Endeavor Health still needs municipal sign off before crews can mobilize.
Approval came from the Health Facilities and Services Review Board, which administers the state certificate of need program. Applicants under that program must demonstrate patient demand, outline financing and show that proposed capacity would not duplicate services already available nearby. Village of Arlington Heights review remains outstanding.
Evanston based Endeavor Health operates nine hospitals, more than 300 care locations and a workforce above 27,000 across the Chicago area. That footprint was assembled through successive mergers, with Northwest Community joining in 2021 and the current system name adopted in 2024. Capital programs of this scale frequently follow consolidation as systems standardize service lines across campuses that once ran independently.
Ambulatory oncology has become a dominant category in hospital construction nationally. Infusion, imaging and follow up care that once required inpatient settings now migrate into outpatient buildings, and reimbursement policy has shifted along the same track. Research access factors in as well, since Endeavor Health reports more than 550 active clinical trials and suburban trial capacity reduces travel into Chicago for enrolled patients.
Plans describe a three story outpatient facility of roughly 100,000 SF, cited elsewhere at 104,000 SF, connected to the existing hospital by a bridge. Programming covers medical, radiation, surgical and gynecologic oncology, infusion services, an expanded neuroscience center and dedicated clinical research space.
