Gilbane Building is serving as construction manager. Design was led by HKS in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic Buildings + Design and clinical stakeholders from both facilities on the site.
Approximately 250,000 SF of clinical space will be added across Avon Hospital and the Richard E. Jacobs Health Center, accompanied by a new parking garage sized for higher patient and visitor volumes.
Emergency, imaging, surgical, oncology, critical care and outpatient functions all gain area. Additional operating rooms are planned at the hospital, medical-surgical inpatient capacity increases, and the intensive care unit grows to serve higher-acuity cases. Diagnostic capacity expands to include additional MRI and CT.
Two external beam radiation oncology machines will join an enlarged cancer center carrying more treatment and infusion area. Linear accelerator installations of this type generally require shielded vault construction with thick concrete walls and dedicated structural support, work that is typically sequenced early in a phased program because of its slab and foundation demands.
Sequencing carries unusual weight here because both buildings remain in continuous operation during construction. Emergency department and critical care additions on active campuses commonly require temporary partitions, infection control barriers, and interim vehicular routing while adjacent departments stay live. Structured parking is frequently delivered ahead of clinical volume on suburban medical campuses, since surface lots often sit on the footprint a new addition will occupy.
Cleveland Clinic has cited sustained demand growth across Lorain County and its west submarket as the basis for the investment, according to materials released through the health system’s news service.
Avon Hospital opened in 2016 as a five-story, 126-bed facility. The Richard E. Jacobs Health Center opened in 2011 and houses specialty and primary care, an outpatient surgery center, a chemotherapy infusion center, an imaging center, and a physical therapy area containing two pools for aquatic therapy.
