AHN’s Allegheny General Hospital will begin a $36M, 4-year exterior renovation of its 90-year-old South Tower in June, covering masonry, 800+ windows, and 60,000 SF of roof. Mascaro Construction will handle the work on the landmark North Shore building.
Allegheny General Hospital’s South Tower, a 22-story structure that has stood on Pittsburgh’s North Shore since 1936, is set to undergo a comprehensive exterior restoration beginning in June. The $36 million project, funded entirely by Allegheny Health Network, carries a four-year completion timeline.
Mascaro Construction Company has been engaged to carry out the scope of work, which centers on the building’s aging exterior systems. Restoration efforts will address the facade’s historic masonry and ornamental terra cotta detailing, along with replacement of more than 800 windows. Roughly 60,000 SF of roofing is also included in the project, requiring both repair and full replacement in affected areas.
Built nearly nine decades ago, the 467,000 SF building reflects a distinctive architectural character, including upper-level cathedral-style windows. Hospital leadership has indicated the intent to preserve that character throughout the project, drawing on both traditional and modern construction methods.
The South Tower serves as the flagship academic medical center for AHN, a network operating 14 hospitals in the greater Pittsburgh region. With 508 licensed beds, the facility functions as a Level 1 trauma center and supports clinical programs across oncology, cardiovascular surgery, orthopedics, transplant services, ophthalmology, and radiology, among others.
All renovation activity is limited to the building’s exterior, with no modifications to internal layouts or floor plans. Hospital officials have stated that clinical operations and patient care will continue uninterrupted throughout construction.
According to reporting by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, AHN separately began preparing last year for a $43 million expansion of the hospital’s emergency department and has also recently added a $13 million aircraft to its LifeFlight air medical fleet.
Allegheny General Hospital’s South Tower is located on the North Shore in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The 1936-built structure stands 22 stories, encompasses 467,000 SF, and contains 508 beds.
