Boston Children’s Hospital Opens Needham Outpatient and Surgical Center on First Avenue Near Route 128

Boston Children’s opened its Needham outpatient and surgical center Jan. 21. The First Avenue facility near Route 128 launches with 6 ORs, specialty clinics and advanced imaging, and is expected to serve about 6,000 pediatric visits monthly as capacity ramps this spring.

Boston Children’s Hospital opened a new outpatient and surgical facility in Needham on January 21, expanding its suburban clinical network and shifting additional pediatric care closer to regional populations. Located on First Avenue near Route 128, the building is the system’s ninth satellite location and began operations at partial capacity, with full utilization expected later this spring.

The center is designed around high-volume outpatient services, including orthopedics, ophthalmology, rehabilitation, and advanced imaging. Surgical operations launched with six operating rooms and infrastructure to expand to ten as demand grows. An interventional radiology program, rarely found in ambulatory environments, is also part of the clinical platform. By midyear, the facility is projected to handle roughly 6,000 pediatric visits each month.

Hospital leadership has emphasized the growing role of satellite sites in system operations, where a large share of patient encounters and most procedures now occur outside the main Boston campus. Several hundred clinicians and staff are expected to work on site daily, adding a new employment base to the Needham area.

Gastroenterology services were consolidated at the location to support a specialized teaching kitchen focused on food allergies and chronic digestive conditions. Patient environments incorporate community artwork and design features intended to support pediatric care delivery.

The opening was reported by the Needham Observer.
