Cleveland Clinic Plans Level I Trauma Center at Main Campus in Cleveland with Targeted 2028 Opening

Cleveland Clinic is pursuing a Level I trauma center for adults and children at its Main Campus, with plans that may include ED expansion and specialty staffing. The project awaits a 2026 review, with a targeted opening in 2028.

Cleveland Clinic is advancing plans to establish a Level I trauma center for adult and pediatric patients at its Main Campus in Cleveland, a move intended to expand the system’s highest-acuity emergency capabilities. The designation represents the most comprehensive level of trauma care, requiring continuous access to specialized surgical teams, critical care resources, and coordinated treatment services.

System leaders indicate the project would address a gap in advanced trauma services at the Main Campus, where patients with severe injuries are currently stabilized but may require transfer for certain levels of care. Existing Level I services operate within the system at Akron General, while several regional hospitals provide Level II trauma care.

Implementation is contingent on a review process with the American College of Surgeons scheduled for 2026. Preliminary planning includes potential expansion of the Main Campus emergency department, recruitment of specialized clinical staff, and additional training for existing caregivers.

Preparation efforts are expected to continue over the next two years in coordination with regulatory agencies and community partners.

Cleveland Clinic has identified 2028 as a target opening timeframe, according to a system announcement.
