Lee’s Summit Medical Center Launches $60 Million Expansion Adding Patient Rooms and Emergency Department Beds in Missouri

Lee’s Summit Medical Center has broken ground on a $60 million expansion adding 26 patient rooms and nine emergency department beds. The project includes two new nursing units, expanded laboratory and pharmacy areas, and cafeteria renovations. Completion is expected in 2027.

A major healthcare facility in Lee’s Summit has commenced a significant expansion program valued at $60 million to address population growth and modernize clinical infrastructure. Lee’s Summit Medical Center leadership announced construction has begun on improvements that will substantially increase inpatient and emergency care capacity.

The expansion will add 26 patient rooms across two new wings on the existing third floor, increasing total bed count from 88 to 114. Emergency department capacity will grow from 13 to 22 beds through approximately 3,500 SF of new construction that extends the emergency entrance closer to the roadway.

Hospital administrators cite demographic pressures as the primary driver for the capital investment. Municipal population has climbed from roughly 85,000 residents in 2007 when the current campus opened to more than 107,000 in 2025. The facility also serves patients from surrounding communities including Harrisonville, Warrensburg, and Sedalia.

Emergency department modifications will feature a redesigned entrance, expanded lobby area, enhanced triage spaces, and improved patient registration systems. Support service upgrades encompass laboratory expansion, pharmacy enlargement, and complete cafeteria renovation.

Food service improvements will benefit a community partnership with Lee’s Summit Meals on Wheels, a nonprofit organization whose volunteers deliver hospital-prepared meals to approximately 140 clients weekly. Kitchen expansion will enable continued support of this program.

Project officials estimate creation of around 30 additional healthcare and support positions. Overall construction will add close to 21,000 SF to the campus with completion anticipated in 2027.

The medical center operates as part of HCA Midwest Health, which maintains more than 150 locations throughout the Kansas City region. Since joining HCA Midwest Health in 2023, investment in the Lee’s Summit community has exceeded $90 million, including intensive care unit expansion, urgent care facilities, and ambulatory surgery centers. City planners project approximately 40,000 new residents will settle in Lee’s Summit over the next three decades.
