Emory University has acquired the former Egleston Hospital site from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at the heart of its Atlanta campus. The 7.5-acre property at 1405 Clifton Road holds two buildings slated for demolition over the next 12 to 18 months.
Emory University has expanded its real estate holdings at the heart of its Atlanta campus through the acquisition of the former Egleston Hospital site. Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta sold the properties to the university, both institutions confirmed this week.
Discussions over the site began after Children’s opened the Arthur M. Blank Hospital in September 2024. That opening consolidated pediatric services and rendered the older Egleston buildings surplus to the health system’s needs. Constructed in 1968 and 2005, the structures were engineered specifically for children’s medical care.
Rather than pursue renovation, Emory evaluated the buildings and chose demolition. Officials determined that adapting facilities built to hospital specifications would prove cost prohibitive for broader university functions. Robin Morey, vice president of campus services and chief planning officer at Emory, leads planning for the parcels.
Abatement and removal are projected to take between 12 and 18 months. Crews will manage hazardous material handling throughout that period. Following demolition, Emory intends to maintain the cleared land as open space in the near term.
Underground infrastructure will survive the teardown. An 840-space parking structure beneath the site will join Emory’s campus parking inventory once work concludes.
