Corewell Health Plans to Demolish Aging Grand Rapids Buildings for 621,000 SF Butterworth Hospital Expansion

Corewell Health unveiled conceptual plans for a 621,000 SF expansion of its Butterworth Hospital campus in Grand Rapids. The project would add a new emergency department, 180 private beds and 12 to 16 operating rooms, with existing buildings at two sites slated for demolition. Completion is targeted for the end of 2030.

Corewell Health has announced conceptual plans to expand its Butterworth Hospital campus in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with a new 621,000 SF facility. The project would add a new emergency department, 180 private beds and 12 to 16 operating rooms.

The health system is considering 230 Michigan Street and 330 Barclay Avenue for the project. Both addresses currently hold existing Corewell Health facilities. Services housed in those aging buildings would be relocated ahead of their proposed demolition.

Corewell Health attributed the plan to the rapid growth of the Grand Rapids market. Over the past year, the average patient census at Butterworth Hospital has consistently exceeded 90 percent. The health system cited population increase and shifting epidemiological trends as continuing drivers of demand for expanded community access to care.

The facility is planned around modernization, with larger private rooms designed to accommodate new technologies and equipment. Older semi-private rooms would be eliminated. Additional planned features include a multi-place hyperbaric chamber and overflow beds.

Josh Kooistra, D.O., president of Corewell Health in West Michigan, said the system is investing in the future of Grand Rapids and intends to work with the community, neighbors and the city before seeking final approval from the board of directors. He noted that the project remains in the early planning process, with many details still to be determined.

The project is targeted for completion at the end of 2030.
