One Donor’s Gift Just Closed a $16 Million Campaign for This Northampton Hospital

Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton has completed a $16 million capital campaign, the largest in its 140-year history. A gift from donor Mary Ann Cofrin capped the effort, which funded a 40% larger Emergency Department with nine additional patient rooms.

Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton has completed a $16 million capital campaign supporting the renovation and expansion of its Emergency Department. Hospital officials described the effort as the largest fundraising campaign in the 140-year history of the Mass General Brigham affiliate.

A donation from Mary Ann Cofrin brought the four-year campaign to its conclusion. Close to 2,000 donors contributed toward the project since it began, according to hospital spokesperson Kelly Mitchell.

The completed department includes nine additional patient rooms, among them expanded behavioral health capacity, and is roughly 40% larger than the space it replaced. Portions of the new Emergency Department opened last summer, while renovation of the legacy section wrapped up this spring.

Cooley Dickinson President and Chief Operating Officer Kevin Whitney and Chief Development Officer Diane Dukette both credited community donors and hospital staff for sustaining emergency operations throughout the multiyear construction. Hospital leaders marked the campaign’s completion at a ceremony held last Friday.

In addition to her financial gift, Cofrin funded a new exterior plaque measuring 13 feet and an interior sign inside the Emergency Department. The sign, which reads “You Are Welcome Here,” appears in the six languages most commonly spoken among patients treated at the hospital. Details of the campaign were reported by the Greenfield Recorder.
