A new inpatient rehabilitation hospital has opened in South Miami, adding 62 beds to Miami-Dade County through a partnership between Baptist Health and Lifepoint Rehabilitation, an operating division of Lifepoint Health. Executives, clinicians, project team members and elected officials attended a ribbon cutting on July 29, 2026.
Baptist Health Rehabilitation Hospital occupies a three-story, 100,000 SF building at 6201 Sunset Drive and was programmed to treat more than 1,200 patients annually. Facilities in this category sit between acute care and skilled nursing in the post-acute continuum, and federal reimbursement rules require daily physician oversight along with intensive therapy volumes, which in turn drive staffing ratios and floor plate geometry during design.
Clinical programs address neurologic conditions, stroke and amputation. Built accommodations include bariatric suites, a dedicated neuro unit and rooms configured for dialysis, reflecting the comorbidity burden common among rehabilitation admissions. Therapy space is divided between large interdisciplinary gyms and a low stimulation gym intended for patients with brain injury or sensory sensitivity, a separation that shapes acoustic and lighting criteria as much as square footage allocation.
A transitional living apartment allows care teams to observe how patients manage routine tasks in a residential environment ahead of discharge. Outdoor therapy takes place in a landscaped courtyard containing gardens, walking paths, miniature golf and shuffleboard.
Pairings between regional health systems and national rehabilitation operators have become a common ownership structure for freestanding facilities of this scale, with the operator contributing program standards and staffing infrastructure while the system retains referral continuity. Baptist Health announced the opening through its own newsroom.
Baptist Health also provides inpatient rehabilitation services at Homestead Hospital and at Bethesda Hospital East in Palm Beach County.
