San Mateo County has completed a $217M expansion and seismic upgrade of the San Mateo Medical Center health campus in California. The project modernizes clinical facilities, improves seismic resilience, and expands care capacity across the county-operated medical center.
San Mateo County has completed a major renovation and expansion of the San Mateo Medical Center Health Campus, transforming the public hospital into a modern, seismically compliant healthcare complex. The multiyear project replaced two 1950s-era buildings that no longer met California seismic standards with new facilities designed to consolidate medical care, public health, and administrative services on a single site.
The campus on 37th Avenue now houses San Mateo Medical Center, the County Coroner’s Office, a Public Health Laboratory, and a range of social and administrative services supporting countywide patients. The work included construction of an 87,000 SF administration building, a new link building serving as the main entrance, and renovation of approximately 35,000 SF of existing hospital space. Site improvements added 250 parking spaces, expanded ADA-accessible parking, introduced electric vehicle charging stations, and improved pedestrian and transit access.
The project also delivered new cafeterias, classrooms, outdoor meeting areas, expanded coroner facilities, and a Biosafety Level 3 public health laboratory. The $217 million project was launched in 2016 and financed through a county lease revenue bond, according to San Mateo County officials.
